It opened to positive reviews and became a major box office success among Deepavali releases of 2002, with Ajith's performance leading to his second Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

Particularly the film did run successfully in Madurai, where most of the scenes were filmed and created a huge fan following for Ajith.

The film features Ajith Kumar in the lead role as a social activist with Vasundhara Das, Meena and Nagma playing supporting roles. The film's score and soundtrack are composed by Deva, whilst cinematography was handled by Ravi K. Chandran. The film opened to positive reviews in June 2001 and became a decent hit at the box office.
